The couple we have become

Once we were that couple out on the drive

Washing the car, my hair up in space buns and midriff on show

And laughter so sweet it tasted of sugary lemonade bubbles.

Now we are standing awkwardly apart on the lawn

Hair bedraggled, loose and wild, eyes swollen and sore

While hostile words cut through skin made soft by an abundance of tears.
