football anxiety

Extra time,

It’s painful, blinding us with nerves

As we cling together like

Survivors of a sinking ship,

Our flags draped over hunched up shoulders,

And nails bitten to the quick.

Could this end it tears?

Who knows?

We’ll open up our eyes when they have scored.

I don’t know about anyone else but I struggle to watch the football because I get too nervous. I do actually have it on right now and just while I have been writing this poem I felt like my heart stopped on two occasions.

I’m no good at watching any sport. And I always got so nervous when I was a competitive swimmer that I would end up throwing up. I should be kept away from sport for my own safety.

For now, I will stay hidden behind the sofa for the next fifteen minutes and I will come out only when that final whistle is blown.

Much Love

Rachel xx

I always think it’s so interesting that we get so caught up in sport contests. Whether it’s football, rugby, or anything else, we are somehow vested in the outcome. And we’re anxious until we know what that outcome is.

I took a year off sports when COVID shut everything down (and then after that sports got really intensely political, and then two of my least favorite teams in all of sports both won their championships last year). I’ve just now started following one of my teams again… they were doing great, and all of a sudden in the last couple weeks since I’ve been watching, they’ve fallen back into mediocrity. Go figure…
