In and out past beating heart,
Through lungs inflated as balloons,
Pinkish like the ones at birthday parties
Puffed up by our tired parents
Wishing they could take a breath
And feel the life back in their veins.
Here in the UK, we have a series on at the moment that takes celebrities and teaches them the techniques that Wim Hof has become famous for.
If you don’t know who he is, have a look on Youtube and you will see that he is very focused on exposing yourself to the cold and breathing in a certain way. Now, I’ve swum the English Channel a few times so I have spent plenty of time in the cold. However, the breathing was really interesting to me.
I’ve found myself geeking out on Youtube videos that talk about the science behind breathing and how important it is to our health. And it’s not only the physical impact, it also has a massive impact on our mental health. Breathing correctly can reduce stress, improve concentration and sleep.
On the TV show this week, the celebrities did the Wim Hof breathing technique and within twenty minutes several of them were having really overwhelming emotional reactions and it seemed to bring up a lot of trauma.
This week I have learnt that breathing through your nose and also holding your breath from time to time can really help your body and your mind. I’d love to hear what other people have experienced using their breath, whether they’ve tried meditation of yoga or already come across Wim Hof and had a go at his method. Even if you haven’t, definitely look into these techniques because it’s fascinating.

I’m a big believer in mindful, proper, intentional breathing. I know it helps me a lot, both physically and mentally. And it’s just good for the body, as you say. I’d guess most of us just don’t pay a lot of attention to the way we breathe unless we do so deliberately. And that can be a good idea.
