That nagging feeling
That pulls at your brain
Knowing you’ve cracked it
When really
You didn’t want to, at all.
For once in your life
You’d rather be thick
So the story’s more fun
And the end is a shock.
AAAARRRGGH! I was reading a thriller that I was actually really looking forward to tackling. And I was quite enjoying it…..Until I got about half way.
And that was when I figured out what was supposed to be the big plot twist.
I’ve been reading the Goodreads reviews and so many people are raving about how good the twist was. I’m not normally that perceptive so I’m a bit shocked that I managed to figure it out so easily. Either I’m getting good at this or those other people are a bit dim.
Anyway, I have to say that figuring out the twist too early is one of life’s most disappointing experiences. And I appear to have officially read too many thrillers so authors need to start upping their game. You have been warned.

I know what you mean, Rachel. It does take some of the zest out of reading if you can predict the plot like that, especially if it’s a plot twist that’s supposed to be startling. Trust me when I tell you that when you’re writing a novel, you have to keep that in mind: that people may be very accustomed to reading crime fiction or thrillers, and you have to be on your game. It’s not always easy!
