a gift for the teacher

A simple apple on the desk

Or a box of chocolates at the end

Of a tiring term where no one cared

About her feelings and the fact

She went home to her cat, crying

To eat her TV dinner while chewing

Over what they said to her.

It’s not about the gifts at all,

But sometimes a bunch of flowers

Are really all it takes.

We have entered the final week of term and some of my students are off on holiday slightly early, so I received my first end of term gift today. Of course, teachers don’t do it for the gifts, but it really does make you feel appreciated.

There are times when students are so unkind to their teachers and they really do forget that we are human and have feelings too. But then there are the lovely students who remind you that you are doing some good in the world.

It wasn’t even the gift that was the thing that made me all emotional – it was the card. This girl had written me the most beautiful message. And I really am proud of this student as she has come out of her shell so much over the year. I also feel a tiny bit of pride in myself as hopefully I’ve played at least a little part in her soing so well this year. And that is why teaching is the best job in the world.

Much Love

Rachel xx

That connection with students is so precious, isn’t it, Rachel? To know you’ve been there for them and they know it and appreciate it is a really special feeling. I’m glad your students reached out to you that way.

I’ve got the gift bags ready for Friday. For y3 staff, jam and home made mint and lemon balm tea with an infuser. For y6, jam, plum gin, more tea and a little money tree grown ourselves as it’s large boy’s final year. We’ve also got a box of chocs for the office and a card for all the teachers in the school who have taught large boy.
