getting political

I’ll fight your fun, your gentle pokes,

Lashing out with angry hurt,

My hot barbed tongue will sear

Through swirling information that

You thought was just a harmless game.

I try not to say anything too political on here because I don’t want to hurt anyone. I don’t want to stomp on people’s feelings just because I find something funny, because I know how harsh it is to be made to feel that your fears are ridiculous and not validated.

However, I do think that platforms like Twitter make absolutely everything political and sensitive. I think I’m writing this because I want to acknowledge to myself that I have to be careful of other people’s feelings.

Today is International Women’s Day, and there was a story in the news that the London Dungeons had turned their Jack the Ripper to Jackie the Ripper. I thought this was harmless fun and rolled my eyes at the keyboard warriors who were kicking up a fuss about it.

I read their point of view, though. And I saw that actually they were making a valid point about women getting attacked and that it might be a bit insensitive to take away the voices of the women who were killed by the Ripper. We are approaching the anniversary of Sarah Everard’s death and we should be looking at ways to protect the safety of women.

My point is that there is quite a fine line and I really don’t know where it is. So I think that I probably just need to watch these arguments play out and just keep my mouth shut.

Much Love
